Jo Ganter specialised in printmaking when she was a student at Edinburgh College of Art (1983-1989), and she has remained committed to etching every since.
This series ranges greatly in scale, the small works being intimate with a lot of detail. Crayon lines and planes of tone and texture suggest figures and architecture. The large works are simpler. Horizontal planes of colour float in a shallow space parallel to the picture plane one above the other. There is a symmetry common to much of her work and, even in the most organic pieces, a reference to horizontal and vertical reflecting a sense - a perception - of space.
Jo's work has been exhibited widely, not only in galleries and institutions in Scotland, but in London, Europe and the USA. She has won a number of awards and her work is in public collections in Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, Antwerp, Kasterlee (Belgium), New York and Portland, Oregon. Jo is an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy and Vice President of The Society of Scottish Artists.
