Peter's wooden bowls and vessels are not what comes to mind when one says 'turned wood'! Beautifully made, intricate and elegant in style, they are pieces of fine applied art, and in many cases, collectors' items.
Peter uses sustainable temperate hardwoods, mainly Sycamore, which is sourced as locally as possible. Sycamore is a pale and fine-grained wood which is particularly receptive to staining and carving. The work is initially turned on the lathe before the application of colour and then it is carved using hand tools. Each piece is unique and the process of making generates ideas for subsequent work.
Peter’s work can be seen in galleries throughout the UK and his recent commissions have included making the awards for the Parliamentarian of the Year and The Place Prize for Contemporary Dance.
I will be showing Peter's rimmed bowls at AAF Hampstead.
